A copy of Marrow’s
Legacy (The Godgame #0) was sent to Confessions of a Reviewer by the author
Keith Deininger in exchange for an honest review. This is said review. This is A Meridian Codex book.
Stories of fantastical proportions, set in an imaginary
world that couldn’t exist, written by an author who specialises in the dark stuff. Why wouldn’t I have wanted
to pick this up and read it? Especially after reading some of the blurb for it.
It sounded right up my street. I was delighted when this copy arrived from Mr
Deininger and couldn’t wait to get stuck right into it!
Eli lives in “The Machine” with his wife Nora and their
daughter Pia. Everything they do in their daily lives is in dedication to The
Machine. They have to worship its very existence and anything contrary to this
is blasphemy.
On a day like any other, something strange happens. A
strange device in the cathedral in Sector One, starts to make a ringing noise.
When it is picked up, a man’s voice repeatedly asks to speak to Eli. When Eli
is brought to it, the voice tells him “the flood is coming”.
Eli has no idea what this means. He wonders, though, if
it has anything to do with the box his father gave him many years before and if
he will find the answers he needs there. Changes are coming and Eli must
prepare for the flood.
So this is a prologue to Mr Deininger’s huge fantasy tale
The Godgame. A prologue so large that it has its own book. It’s not a huge
book. You will probably read it in a couple of hours. So what was it like?
With it being an introduction to the story there aren’t
too many characters in this part to confuse you. Eli, Nora and Pia sound like
any other family in The Machine. Eli and Nora are hardworking and attend the
services to worship The Machine religiously. Pia is a little bit of a rebel and
loves nothing more than visiting with Mr Wicker so he can tell her stories from
the many books he keeps.
If her parents knew about this they would not be happy
and the authorities would not be happy with Mr Wicker because all of the books
would be considered blasphemous. He knows a lot of secrets but is yet to
discover the answers to the important secrets. A few other characters you meet
along the way are mainly priests within The Machine. They preach the gospels of
their saviour and maintain that everything revolves around The Machine. Whilst
keeping everything mysterious, all of the characters in this story play their
parts very well in building that mystery and completely drawing you in to the
story.
The plot? No idea yet. This is just a taster to whet your
appetite for the main event. And whet your appetite it certainly does. It
sounds like many other “future world” books or films you may have read or seen
but is extremely effective in building a certain amount of tension and
intrigue. Being a prologue, it gives absolutely nothing away other than the
fact the flood is coming. You have no idea what “the flood” is and neither does
Eli, but this story is perfect in grabbing you by the throat and not wanting to
let go of you before you discover for yourself exactly what is going on.
To summarise: a prologue for the main event. Set in a
fantastical world inside a huge machine, it is full of mystery and sets you up
perfectly for an oncoming fantasy adventure that is sure to be both detailed
and dark if Mr Deininger’s previous works are anything to go by.
